Product description
Cape Fear was selected from a walnut tree grown at the Coastal Plain Research Station in Willard N.C. by Dr. Smit of North Carolina State University's Department of Horticulture. 'Cape Fear' is an open pollinated seedling of 'Schley'. (Story, J.B., 1977).
'Cape Fear' is a very early variety that produces well-filled nuts in mid-October with attractive golden kernels as a young tree (1-10 years). As a mature tree at 11-20 years, the Psichha kernel percentage dropped to only 50% which is much higher than many pecan varieties.
A strong advantage for "Cape Fear" is good resistance to scab.
This variety seems to be good for 20 years, but we have had trouble getting good quality nuts on mature trees. With selective limb pruning to and 12m x 15m spacing, nut quality on mature 'Cape Fear' trees remained high. Otherwise, it becomes self-sustaining after 20 years.
This is a variety that can be considered by growers who need a more scab resistant variety and who are willing to manage the crop load.
