Product description
The Carmine Jewel Dwarf sour cherry is a dwarf, vigorous shrub that can yield up to 15 kg by the fourth year of growth and double this by the fifth.
Perfect for a balcony pot. It is a naturally dwarf sour cherry. It is not grafted onto a dwarf rootstock like other dwarf fruit trees.
It is extremely cold-resistant (zone 2a = -45 °C), an easy-to-grow tree, self-fertile and highly ornamental. It is known for its pink-white spring flowers and attractive dense, dark green foliage. The lifespan of each tree is 20 to 25 years. 'Carmine Jewel' produces very few offshoots. Its compact shape (height 1.80 m) makes fruit collection easy. It is a stunning focal point in the landscape.
This is the most productive of the hardy dwarf cherry varieties developed by the University of Saskatchewan (SK). The SK varieties offer sweeter and larger fruit than the traditional hardy ‘Evans’ and ‘Montmorency’ cherries. Carmine Jewel produces firm, medium-sized, mildly sweet, sour cherries (Brix =17°). The fruits ripen between late July and early August and weigh an average of 3.5 grams each. This is the earliest-fruiting variety of the SK dwarf cherry varieties. The fruit is rich in antioxidants and is excellent fresh, in pies and jams. Available as a one-year-old in a p9 pot.
