Product description

Limnio, the oldest Greek variety. Cultivation areas: Very old, native, red variety, referred to as "Limnia grape" in the "Onomastikon" of Polydevkis, whose cultivation center was Lemnos. Today it is cultivated in Lemnos, Halkidiki, Evros, Rodopi, Xanthi, Kavala, Serres, Larissa and Karditsa. It has nothing to do with the variety cultivated in the Thessalian area under the name Limniona.

Plant: It is moderately vigorous, fertile, productive, very resistant to drought and most diseases with the exception of downy mildew. It shows good affinity with most subjects that have been used in the past, as well as with those used today in Greece. It is shaped into a cup and linear bilateral cord (Royat) and accepts short pruning at 2-3 eyes. It adapts well to most soils, but prefers dry, barren, stony soils. It starts growing in the first fortnight of April and ripens in September. Each fruiting vine bears 2-3 medium grapes, about 250g, cylindrical to cylindrical-conical, very densely veined, which are very difficult to cut. The rails are

usually medium, 2g, disc-shaped, with an uneven degree of ripening, with a moderately thick rind, red-black coloring and colorless flesh, resistant, astringent, acidic, with a light, special aroma, with 2-3 medium gigarts. The skins represent 95% of the weight of the grape and the skins together with the pips 10.2% of the weight of the skins.

Product: Limnio produces wines of relatively high quality, of medium acidity, with a light special aroma, medium tannins, medium color and body. He participated in the production of the most famous for their quality wines of Mount Athos, such as Monoxylitis Wine. Today, from this variety are produced the red dry wines of Designation of Origin "Lemnos", "Slopes of Melitona" (together with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet franc), as well as some Local Wines, mixed with other varieties (Thracian, Ismaric, Makedonikos et al.).
