Wineberry or Japanese blackberry is a small berry that looks like a red hedgehog. It ripens in August.
Native to China, Korea and Japan, perennial, sucker, already in the first year of its life it reaches its maximum size (from about 1 to 3 meters) with soft, pendulous, unbranched shoots covered with red down. These will flower and bear fruit the following year, while new non-fruitful shoots will be born from the rhizomatous root system.
