Product description

It bears a small, bright orange fruit 50 mm long, with a sweet smell and juicy, sweet pulp. Very cold hardy but does not like standing water in winter. The attractive large oak-shaped leaves make it an interesting garden plant.

Carica or Vasconcellea quercifolia, known by the common names papaya-tomato or papaya-do-mato, is a botanical species of the family Caricaceae, native to the Atlantic Forest. It occurs naturally in Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Ecuador, but is currently a rare plant in its habitat. The fruits are similar to papaya, although they are much smaller and their skin is slightly striped.

Rural populations made sweets from its fruits and trunk, which probably contributed to its near disappearance from the forests.
