Product description

ATHOS. The lemon tree from the Crimea.

Among the promoted varieties for lemon trees in areas where there is a risk of frost or low temperatures, the Nouvel Athos variety is recommended.

It is a versatile and very productive variety.

This variety was introduced to our country in 1977 by the agronomist Thomas Samoladas who was a political refugee in the Soviet Union, originally from Tyrnavos, Larisa and was an agronomist-researcher in Abkhazia, Crimea, of the then Soviet Union, as an agronomist-researcher he was responsible in the field of genetic improvement with a specialty in the creation of new citrus cultivars resistant to cold and other biotic and abiotic factors. He worked at the Arboretum in Sukhumi, Abkhazia from 1964 – 1995, the varieties created by Samoladas were spread by the Soviets to the various mild microclimates of Crimea.

We experimented with this variety from Sukhumi at the Institute of Subtropical Plants and Olives of Chania and compared to other lemon varieties it showed a strong resistance to drought and low temperatures, its fruits are juicy and with a low number of seeds.
