Averrhoa carambola. Starfruit is a small, slow-growing, evergreen, subterranean tropical tree, rarely exceeding 8-9 meters in height, and young trees generally have a pyramidal shape changing to a symmetrical rounded top. It is grown for its unusual yellow or orange fruits, star-shaped in cross-section. the whole fruit is edible and usually eaten fresh, but can also be used in cooking and in preserves or juices, as the fruit is strongly acidic due to high levels of calcium oxalate. Among the different varieties, the taste ranges from sweet to slightly sour to very sour. Cultivated in most lowland tropical and subtropical regions of the world, it needs full sun, thrives in almost any type of soil, but requires good drainage. It is susceptible to wind damage
