Product description

Place of Origin: Woodstock, NY

Year: 1826

Origin: Seedling of Esopus Spitzenburg

Uses: Cider, Food, Baking

First planted in 1964 by Donnie Wenk as a large acreage crop.

This red-skinned variety was discovered on Phillip Rick's farm and was named by Judge J. Buel by another man named Jonathan Hasbrouck.

In the past, this variety was also sold to those who made caramel apples. Today, these apples are well-loved to be turned into fresh cider for farmers' markets. Their slightly more sour than sweet flavor makes for a nice snack for a like-minded person and also makes a nice applesauce.

This slow-ripening variety produces beautiful, bright red apples with crisp and juicy white flesh and a bold, tart but well-balanced flavor. It is a great apple for fresh eating, freezing and cooking. The fruit ripens late in the season (mid-September to mid-October) and has a long shelf life, keeping anywhere from 3 to 6 months in the refrigerator. Pollination with Golden and red Delicious.

Very resistant to bacterial and fungal diseases.
